Almost everyone wants to live a better and more relaxed life. We are daily bombarded with dream solutions for almost every challenge we face.
We all want to lose weight or get fit, and the less effort it takes the better…
A famous comedian once said
‘I can easily give up smoking or drinking whenever I want - having done it so many times.’
Paying for health club membership or special diet advice in advance and stopping when the enthusiasm wears off. Reminds me of a remark I heard from a senior family member of Coleman Mustard fame. ‘We make more money out of the mustard left on the plate than from the palatable consumption of our products.
We all seek instant satisfaction and happiness – the world has so much to offer, theatres, music - classical, rock or jazz, stand- up comedians, holidays, cruises, night clubs, drugs, drink, gambling, sex - the list is endless.
All pleasure lived for the moment – almost like living someone else’s life, wafting off into the imaginary wonderland of dreams, maybe even to that magical moment in time when it feels as though you died and woke up in heaven.
All of this good is and wonderful, if that’s what you want. Just think about what happens when the effect wears off? - You’re softly landing back on earth with feelings of pleasure, satisfaction and fulfilment. -then Wham!! - back where you left off and all your challenges still there!
The same thing I believe is with meditation. The humungous number of methods, each with their own proponents and supporters, boggle the mind – each offering peace, tranquillity and a changed life.
Most, aim to ‘empty your brain’ of all thoughts using mantras or just focussing on one given spot – emptying without filling – usually this does the trick.
Gentle, soothing background music is an important factor in facilitating a complete sense of relaxation. Classical or light orchestral music is ideally suited, hard rock and, jazz only serve to overwhelm any thoughts or reflections. Songs act as an unwanted distraction, often filling and feeding your mind with ‘brain pollution’ and confusion – not conducive to the real meaning of Meditation.
All of these methods and traditions are MEDITATIONS.
Meditation - How many of us understand the real meaning of the word?
Let’s start with the definition of Meditation, this comes from the Latin ‘MEDITATIO,’ meaning to THINK, CONTEMPLATE, DEVISE and PONDER.
Webster’s dictionary gives a simple definition - ‘The act or process of spending time in quiet thought, an expression of someone’s thoughts on something.’
Powerful - but simple and straightforward.
Meditation - a much interpreted word – construed/elucidated differently dependent on the language and method of those interpreting and usually far removed from the core original meaning.
Let’s face it, a majority sampling of the mainline meditations coming from the East originate from an Idol-worship related form of praying, invoking all sorts of deities, whether human, animal, birds, even fish and inanimate. Most bearing no relationship to the Christian, Jewish or Muslim basic belief in an all universal God.
